HORSESHOE BAY, TEXAS – The West Texas A&M women’s golf team sits third following the first round of the 2014 Lone Star Conference Women’s Golf Championship with a team score of 322 on the par 71 Ram Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay.
On the women’s side, Tarleton State, ranked No. 5 in the latest Golfstat rankings, leads the seven-team field with a 307 score. Midwestern State is second with a 315 score, followed by the Lady Buffs, who are ranked 29th nationally, Angelo State (327) and Cameron rounds out the top five with a 331 score. Texas A&M-Commerce sits sixth with a 334 score, followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Individually, Midwestern State’s Brenna Moore and Tarleton State’s Isabell Jimenez-Perea are tied for first with a 4-over 75, while Tarleton State’s Sharon Lau is third with a 76. Lady Buff duo of sophomore Glory Jangthongsiri and senior Vanessa Spradlin are tied for fourth with a 77, along with Beatriz Prados of Tarleton State.
The women’s championship will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
On the men’s side, Texas A&M-Commerce fired a team score of 298 to take the top seed heading into match play. Midwestern State finished second with a 307 score. Cameron was third with a 312, followed by the Buffs at 319.
TAMUC’s Marcus Sanna paced the field with an even par 71.
WT sophomore Carson Greathouse and senior Devin Montague tied for seventh with a 77 to lead the Buffs. Sophomore Ethan Peterson was 16th with an 81, while sophomores Brandel Woodman and Dylan Rodriquez were 19th and 20th, respectively, with an 84 and a 90.
The Buffs were in the middle of match play in the second round with Texas A&M-Commerce when play was halted. The round will pick up where it left off tomorrow at 8 a.m. and will follow with the final round as the two winning teams of match play from the second round will play for the team championship and the two losing teams will play for third place.
