CONOVER, N.C. – West Texas A&M sophomore Glory Jangthongsiri carded a 79 on Thursday in the second of four rounds of the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship on the par 71, 5,928-yard Rock Barn Golf and Spa Course. She currently sits tied for 36th with a 155 score.
Jangthongsiri, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, opened the tournament with a 76 yesterday and followed with a 79 Thursday. She played the front nine Thursday, 1-over, but got into some trouble on the back nine, going 7-over for the side.
“The course condition was a little tough today because of rain,” WT head coach Meredith Jameson said. “Glory played good on the front nine, but she struggled saving pars on the back. I’m optimistic for tomorrow because she is striking the ball well this week.”
Barry’s Maria Paola Fiorio leads the 72-player field with a 144. She carded a 71 on Thursday to overtake the top spot heading into the back half of the championship. Lynn’s Louise Manalo and St. Leo’s Marie Coors, playing as an individual, are tied for second with a 145.
In the team standings, Lynn leads the 12-team field with a 591 score on rounds of 294 and 297. Barry is second with a 594 score, followed by Lone Star Conference member Tarleton State at 599. Rollins is fourth at 603 and Central Oklahoma rounds out the top five at 608.
A total of 72 golfers are competing in the national championship. The top three teams from each of the four super regionals and the top three finishers each of the four super regionals from non-advancing teams qualify for the national championship.
Lenoir-Rhyne University is the host for the championship as the Rock Barn Golf & Spa hosted the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf South and Southeast Super Regional in 2012 and will host the Division II Men’s Golf National Championship in 2015.
