24 year old Derrick James Mason was arrested and booked into Potter County on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
It happened on March 16 around 10:00 p.m. when a patient came to an Amarillo hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand.
Police say the victim says he was at the Hastings at Wolflin and Georgia when he was approached by a man he had seen soliciting money a few weeks ago.
While the victim was in the store's parking lot, officers say the suspect reached into his pocket and pulled out a firearm.
The victim immediately threw up his hands in defense and the suspect fired one round, striking the victim in the hand.
Police say the suspect took off and the victim went to the hospital where an off duty officer put word out on the incident.
On duty officers recognized the suspect from the description and knew a possible address to find him.
Police went to the apartment complex, found and arrested Mason.
