AMARILLO -- AISD broke ground today for Bowie 6th Grade Campus.
The Bowie 6th Grade Campus is being built to relieve overcrowding at Bowie Middle School and to create a better environment for student learning at both campuses. Bowie Middle School will only house 7th and 8th grades once the 6th grade campus is open in fall of 2015.
"We are fortunate the voters of Amarillo ISD stepped up to support a nontraditional yet important learning facility for our youth, to better meet the needs of our middle school students in this area," School Board Member Anette Carlisle said.
Voters gave approval for the 6th grade campuses for Bowie and Travis middle schools in the May 2013 bond election. Together, the two 6th grade campuses will cost approximately $28.6 million to build and furnish.
"The Bowie 6th Grade Campus will provide a safe and unique learning space, bridging elementary to the older middle school years, allowing greater intellectual and emotional growth at an important transition point in these students' lives, as well as expanding learning space for the 7th and 8th grades at Bowie Middle School," Carlisle said.
