General Motors knew of an issue with its ignition switch years earlier than previously reported.
A filing with Federal Safety Regulators shows GM had discovered an ignition defect in some models back in 2001, three years earlier than the carmaker previously disclosed.
Automakers are required to inform Federal Regulators of safety defects within five days of discovering them.
But the filing does not make clear whether that issue is related to a defect that prompted a recall of 1.4 million cars last month.
The issue cited in the recall is linked to 12 deaths and at least 31 crashes over the past decade.
Both Congress and the Justice Department are investigating.
