Easter Sunday Security

Amarillo -- Amarillo Police say while you go hunting Easter eggs this Sunday, criminals could be hunting for your property in church parking lots.

Because of the higher volume of people on Easter, several churches hire off duty officers to help with both lot security, and traffic congestion once the service is done.

Sergeant Brent Barbee with Amarillo Police says around eight churches currently higher APD officers on a regular basis, and he expects that number to go up.

Sometimes however the help can come from within.

"We have added security the last few years, we have two people we pay to be here," said Outreach Associate Pastor Murray Gossett. "We have an off duty Amarillo police officer who's also part of the congregation."

According to the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Purdue University, church attendance increases by nearly 25% on Easter.
