West Texas A&M seniors Scott Cone and Tyler McKnight were named to the 2014 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-Region VI Baseball Team.

CANYON  -- West Texas A&M seniors Scott Cone and Tyler McKnight were named to the 2014 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-Region VI Baseball Team, the organization announced Thursday.   Cone and McKnight become the first Buffs to earn academic all-region accolades since Zach Walker in 2011.

Cone, a pitcher from Glenwood, New South Wales, Australia, has a 3.59 grade-point average in biology and is third on the team with a 5-2 record in 12 starts.  He has a 3.82 ERA in 68.1 innings with 62 strikeouts as the opposition is hitting .261 against him.

McKnight, an outfielder from Durango, Colo., leads the team with a .399 average in 36 starts.  He has 59 hits, which is third on the team, with a team-high 11 doubles, four triples, one home run and 21 RBI.  He is slugging a team-best .547 and reaching base at a .431 clip, while going a team-high 9 of 9 in stolen bases.  He has a 3.45 GPA in environmental studies.

Along with Cone and McKnight, David Goggin of Angelo State was the only other Lone Star Conference student-athlete named to the 11-member team.   WT and Colorado Mesa each led the way with two selections.  All 11 athletes will move on to the national ballot.

The Buffs close the 2014 regular season this weekend at Cameron University.  The series is scheduled for a single, nine-inning game Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a 7/9 doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.  Live stat links can be found on www.gobuffsgo.com
