(NBC News) With funding for highway projects running out and the surge of children from Central America unabated, lawmakers are preparing to leave on summer break.
On immigration, House Democrats want the Senate plan: $3 billion to beef up the border and speed up the hearings that Central American kids are legally entitled to.
House Rrepublicans would end the right to hearings, spend $660 million, and send a message that anyone crossing the border illegally will be immediately deported.
A conservative revolt led by Texas Tea Party Senator Ted Cruz killed the GOP plan.
Only on one issue, fixing the Veterans Administration, was there bipartisan agreement to spend $17 billion for more doctors and decrease waiting times for patients.
