CANYON – Freshman Sarah Climer and senior Dustin Dickson finished the first half of multi events on Thursday as the West Texas A&M men’s and No. 12 women’s track and field teams began the first day of competition in the 2014 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Climer currently sits in fourth in the women’s heptathlon after four events while Dickson is in eighth in the men’s decathlon after five events.
The meet this week began early this afternoon and will extend through Saturday evening. Texas A&M-Kingsville is hosting the competition in Kingsville, Texas at Javelina Stadium. The Buffs and Lady Buffs are looking for the season sweep as they each took home the hardware during the indoor season, their first LSC titles in program history. WT also won both LSC Cross Country Championships last fall.
Teams competing at the LSC Championship include Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico, McMurry, Midwestern State (women only), Harding, TAMUK, Texas A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State.
Climer and Dickson were the only athletes from WT competing today. After four events of the women’s heptathlon, Climer finds herself in fourth place with 2,448 points. For track events she placed fourth in the 100m hurdles (16.13) and sixth in the 200m dash (27.10). In the field, she cleared 1.41m in the high jump for fifth place before setting a new PR in shot put at 9.90m with a third place finish.
In the men’s decathlon, Dickson currently sits in eight place with 2,934 points after five events. He placed seventh (11.91) in the 100m dash and eighth (55.84) in the 400m dash on the track. Dickson then started off field events with the long jump in seventh place (6.02m), before finishing eighth (9.37m) in shot put and tying for first place (1.84m) in the high jump.
The decathlon will resume at 10:30 a.m. and the heptathlon at 11 a.m. Friday morning. See the attached “Meet Central” link for more info on tomorrow’s schedule.
In the championship meet, regardless of the number of teams, official team scores shall be kept and recorded as follows: (8 scoring) Individual Events: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 and Relay Events: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. Medals will be awarded to the top-three individual finishers in each event along with the top-three teams in relay events.
WT currently has 28 provisional qualifying marks between the men and women. Individuals who qualify will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship on May 22-24 in Allendale, Mich. After the LSC Championship, the teams will have one more meet before nationals in the OBU Last Chance (May 8).
