CARROLLTON – Coming off of an 11-3 season in 2013, the West Texas A&M football team was picked second in the 2014 Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll Tuesday at the annual conference football media day at Coyote Ridge Golf Course in Carrollton, Texas.
Tarleton State, the co-defending champion from 2013, was picked as preseason conference favorite, followed by the Buffs and co-defending champion Eastern New Mexico was selected third.
Angelo State junior quarterback Kyle Washington was selected as LSC Offensive Player of the Year, while Texas A&M-Commerce senior defensive lineman Charles Tuaau was named LSC Defensive Player of the Year.
The Texans had a league-best eight first place votes and 139 points as the poll was voted on by the league’s coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives throughout the league.
WT, coming off its second-straight NCAA playoff appearance and berth in the NCAA National Quarterfinal, tallied 127 points and four first place votes. ENMU have five first place votes and 115 points, followed by Midwestern State with two first place nods and 111 points.
The Rams of Angelo State were selected fifth with 99 points and one first place vote. Texas A&M-Commerce rounded out the first place votes with one and 95 points which was good for sixth. Texas A&M-Kingsville was selected seventh with 49 points and conference affiliate member McMurry was eighth with 21 points.
WT opens the 2014 season Thurs., Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. (CT) at Colorado State-Pueblo. The home slate begins Sat., Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium versus Tarleton State.
