On June 30, 1966, Long Island, New York native Irv Gordon purchased a cherry red Volvo P1800, and hes been driving that car ever since. From his long, daily commute to work every day, to impulsive cross country trips to check out a new diner, over the last 40+ years Irv has driven all over the United States (multiple times) in that car.
He celebrated his one-millionth mile in 1987. In 1998, at 1.69 million miles, he was awarded the Guinness World Record for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle, and breaks his own record every time he goes for a drive. In 2002, Gordon turned his two-millionth mile driving down Times Square in a star-studded celebration. Now, the 74-year-old is about to drive his three-millionth mile - a milestone that no other person has come close to achieving.
More About Irv Gordon: In 1966, Irv Gordon purchased a cherry red Volvo P1800. After buying his car, he spent time behind the wheel for the same reasons most people do: commuting to work (125-miles round-trip to his job as a science teacher), for fun and for everyday activities. He logged his first 250,000 miles in less than five years. He celebrated his one-millionth mile in 1987, driving a loop around the Tavern on the Green in Central Park. He retired nine years later and with more time on his hands, he made driving his pastime. He drove through big cities at night and spent afternoons in small town coffee shops. He became an icon for resiliency and passion for the road. He met Matt Lauer and hung out with Jon Stewart. He talked cars with Jay Leno and Jim Belushi. In the mid-90's, the Guinness Book of World Records certified his Volvo for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle. In March 2002, he turned his two-millionth mile driving through Times Square - a milestone no other individual has accomplished in more than 100 years of automobile manufacturing. More than 47 years after Gordon took the keys, the car has the same engine, same radio, same axles, same transmission, and of course, the same driver. He is the only person who has ever driven his P1800.
