(WYFF) A potentially debilitating virus we don't hear much about anymore has saved the life of a South Carolina college student.
Stephanie Lipscomb was heading toward a dream of helping children by becoming a nurse when she learned that her crippling headaches were being caused by a brain tumor.
It was aggressive, and even after surgery, radiation and chemotherapy the cancer came back.
That's when doctors at Duke University offered her the chance to be the first human to undergo an experimental treatment.
Lipscomb had a modified version of the polio virus injected into the tumor with hopes of killing it. She is now cancer free.
Her new plan is to work with young cancer patients so she can help them learn what life taught her.
