Back to Iraq

President Obama orders humanitarian aid drops and limited airstrikes in Iraq.
(NBC News)  Humanitarian aid drops are underway in Iraq, and U.S. airstrikes against I.S.I.S. forces may be on the horizon.

U.S. military planes have dropped 8,000 meals and more than 5,000 gallons of water to starving Iraqis, many of them women and children trapped on a mountain in northern Iraq with Islamic militants threatening to kill them.

"The United States of America cannot turn a blind eye. We can act, carefully and responsibly, to prevent a potential act of genocide," President Obama said when announcing the new missions.

Mr. Obama has authorized targeted airstrikes to protect the food drops and U.S. diplomats at our consulate in Erbil, where the terrorist group I.S.I.S. is advancing.
