April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month; FSS Hosting Events

Be a SAAMaritan, Not A Bystander - Friday - The 806 - Spoken Word & Art Show - Teens at 6 p.m. - Adults at 7 p.m.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and Family Support Services has been involved with several activities to bring awareness to this issue.   The group's main focus has been on not being a bystander and instead encouraging people to take an active role in helping to prevent sexual violence - the theme is to Be a SAAMaritan, Not A Bystander

FSS organizers will be passing out pledge cards to local businesses.  The cards encourage people to promise not to condone or engage in sexual violence.

At the beginning of the month, an art show featuring artwork created by survivors was put on display at Paint and Lens in Sunset Art Galleries, 3701 Plains Boulevard. The display is based on the Japanese concept of Kintsugi, a technique of using gold to mend broken objects.

"Kintsugi is based on the Japanese belief that when something has suffered damage and has a history, it becomes more beautiful," said Angie Stovall, FSS Crisis Services Coordinator. "The artwork on display will symbolize the healing process."

The art will be displayed Friday night, April 25th, at The 806 as part of FSS's Be A SAAMaritan night.  The event will also feature spoken word beginning with teens at 6 p.m. and adults at 7 p.m.; there will also be events at various clubs and restaurants on 6th that night.
