APD Investigating Saturday Night's Head-On Collision on Amarillo Boulevard East

Police say the 48-year-old driver of the Pontiac was traveling at a high rate of speed and struck the westbound side’s cement retaining wall with the passenger side of the vehicle. The driver over-corrected, crossed eastbound lanes of traffic, and struck the cement wall on the other side.
AMARILLO -- On Satuday around 9:20 p.m., Amarillo Police responded to a crash on the overpass in the 4000 block of East Amarillo Blvd.  

A silver 2007 Pontiac G6 was traveling west bound on Amarillo Blvd. 

Police say the 48-year-old driver of the Pontiac was traveling at a high rate of speed and struck the westbound side’s cement retaining wall with the passenger side of the vehicle.  The driver overcorrected, crossed eastbound lanes of traffic, and struck the cement wall on the other side.  The vehicle continued to travel west bound in the inside lane of east bound traffic. 
A gray Chevrolet Silverado pickup was traveling east bound on the inside lane of traffic and struck the Pontiac head-on. 

The driver of the Pontiac was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries, and remains hospitalized.  

The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital and was treated and released.  A passenger in the pickup refused treatment.  
Alcohol and speed are contributing factors in this crash.  The Amarillo Boulevard overpass was shut down for approximately 3 hours.  

The Amarillo Police Traffic Investigations Squad is investigating this crash.
