APD Canine Officer Take 5th in National Competition

Cpl Cody Lavery and his dog Chuky, from the Amarillo Police Department placed 5th overall in the timed competition. Two years ago in Vicksburg Mississippi, during this same training and competition, Cpl Lavery and Chuky took first place.
AMARILLO -- The National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA) held their annual training conference and competition in Amarillo.

In this year’s competition there were 111 dogs and handlers.

Cpl Cody Lavery and his dog Chuky, from the Amarillo Police Department placed 5th overall in the timed competition. In the three minute competition the dogs must navigate a large area with various containers, attempting to locate as many narcotic “hides” as they can without making any false hits. Two years ago in Vicksburg Mississippi, during this same training and competition, Cpl Lavery and Chuky took first place.

This will be Chuky’s last competition. Chucky is retiring after 10 years of service from his work as a police K9 and will enjoy “retirement” while staying in the home of Cpl Lavery.

Cpl. Lavery just received a new dog and his name is Koss. Lavery and Koss will be hitting the streets soon in the COPPS unit of the Police Department.
