Amarillo Police Arrest Woman in Stolen Vehicle on Drug Charges

Stephanie Janelle Betancourt was arrested on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 less than I oz; Possession of Marijuana less than 2 oz. The vehicle was released to the owner.
AMARILLO -- Tuesday morning, Amarillo Police pulled over a vehicle that matched a description of a stolen vehicle in the 1300 block of N Johnson and detained 34-year-old Stephanie Janelle Betancourt. 

A check of the tag number showed the vehicle was stolen on August 23. Betancourt claimed that she was given the vehicle by a friend and agreed to help officers locate this person. 
During inventory of the car, officers found a small amount of methamphetamine in the Betancourt's purse. 

She was arrested and placed in the back seat of a patrol car. While officers were transporting the suspect to jail, they could detect a strong smell of marijuana coming from the back seat area. After arriving at Potter County Correction Center and removing the female from the car, officers checked the back seat and found a small baggie of marijuana that the female attempted to discard. 

Police say Betancourt had hidden the marijuana in her bra before officers stopped her.

Betancourt was arrested on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 less than I oz; Possession of Marijuana less than 2 oz. The vehicle was released to the owner. 

The investigation into the stolen auto remains ongoing.
