AMARILLO -- On Sunday at 11:30 a.m., APD officers responded to a call in the area of 7th and Bonham on a theft in progress.
Amarillo Police soon arrested 43-year-old Trygve Orbeck on a felony charge Theft of Materials (copper), Evading Arrest, and one local Municipal warrant.
While enroute, officers were advised that Xcel Energy employees were notified of a theft in progress from a substation near this location.
Once officers arrived, they began to look for the suspect in the area.
Officers located a spool of cooper wire stolen out of the substation, along with backpack.
An Xcel Energy employee, who is also a commissioned reserve Randall County Deputy detained Orbeck.
The investigation revealed Orbeck had entered the substation area and removed the copper wire from a spool and started threading it through the fence. Then started pulling the wire from the substation area but apparently got scared off prior to officer’s arrival.
Xcel employee witnessed Orbeck changing shirts from the dark colored shirt as he was quickly walking away from the area along the rails to trails biking path.
The suspect was detained and placed in handcuffs at that time by the reserve deputy, and was told to remain there while the deputy retrieved some of the suspects clothing he tried to discard. As the deputy went to retrieve the clothing, the suspect took off running in an attempt to escape custody.
Orbeck was booked into the Potter County Jail.
