Amarillo City Council Propose Tax Increase

The money will be used to hire seven more policemen and provide a staff of nine people for the animal management and welfare department.
AMARILLO -- Amarillo City Council members propose a small tax increase for the next fiscal year.

It will be a half cent increase per $100,000 household.

According to members, the half cent increase will produce about $600,000 out of their $300-million budget.

The money will be used to hire seven more policemen and provide a staff of nine people for the animal management and welfare department.

City of Amarillo Mayor Paul Harpole says, "For the capital needs of the city and the other things, we're fortunate the raise in sales tax revenue and raise in new builds, so new property values,has increased our revenue, so that's what we're left with is a proposed half cent sales tax increase."

On September 16, council members will have their last hearing and reading on the budget and proposed tax rate.
