FRITCH -- All areas of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area now open following the Double Diamond Fire.
The 2,583 acre fire started near Fritch, Texas and burned through the east side of the park on May 11, 2014. Approximately 1,474 acres or 2.3 square miles burned within the park boundary. Some areas remain temporarily inaccessible by vehicle due to road closures outside the National Recreation Area. “Our partner agencies worked together seamlessly to provide safe and effective suppression efforts,” said Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument Superintendent Robert Maguire.
Superintendent Maguire said, “Our hearts go out to those affected by the Double Diamond Fire. We know there will be a long healing process for those affected by the fire. “
“The park did not escape impacts from the fire,” said Superintendent Maguire. He added, “No structures were damaged, however visitors will see areas where the fire swept through and stripped the land of vegetation. Due to the ongoing drought we do not expect to see recovery to vegetation until significant rains occur.”
Park visitors should exercise caution when visiting fire affected areas. Guardrails are damaged at Fritch Fortress and drivers should reduce speed when traveling in the area. Blowing dust may be especially harsh in recently burned areas. Power is being restored to the area, but it may be some time before all park facilities are fully operational. The recently opened Harbor Bay Trail is partially in the burned area, but is open for use from the Harbor Bay trailhead.
Visitors to Lake Meredith National Recreation Area are encouraged to call for the latest information on closures and restrictions. Fire bans and restrictions remain in effect. No open fires are permitted within the park, and surrounding counties are under burn bans.
