(NBC News) The United States government is ratcheting up the pressure on Vladimir Putin over Ukraine.
On Thursday the Senate passed a bill providing $1-billion in aid, while the House approved sanctions called for by President Obama and and urged more be considered.
"Putin will calculate, notwithstanding his amassing of troops, as to what are the consequences if he in fact takes the next step," warned Senator Robert Menendez.
President Obama has warned the U.S. could push much tougher sanctions.
"We have not yet taken steps that will target entire sectors of the Russian economy like finance, or military sales, or energy," Mr. Obama said during a visit to Italy.
