(NBC News) Heads of state from some 50 African nations, along with hundreds of other business and political leaders, are in the nation's capital for the first ever us Africa business summit.
While the summit will touch on everything from human rights to climate change, world hunger and women's issues, the goal is to focus on Africa as an economic goldmine.
"This is a moment of amazing opportunity for Africa," said Secretary of State, John Kerry.
Africa has six of the world's fastest growing economies and China is investing $200 billion a year in trade there.
The U.S. wants to step up its game.
