Abused Kids Hospitalized At "Alarming" Rate

NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT -- More than 4,500 children were hospitalized because of abuse last year, and 300 of them died from their injuries, Yale School of Medicine researchers report in a new study.

It's the first survey to detail how severely kids have been abused and whether abuse put them in the hospital.

The director of Child Abuse Prevention Programs at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, Dr. John Levanthal, says "These numbers are higher than the rate of sudden infant death syndrome, which is alarming."  The report is in the March issue of "Pediatrics."
