Collingsworth County Sheriff Arrested

Jerry Allen Accused of Violating Texas' Nepotism Laws
WELLINGTON -- Another panhandle area sheriff is in trouble with the law.

The Collingsworth county sheriff is indicted on misdemeanor charges of abuse of official capacity and official misconduct

Sheriff Jerry Allen faces up to a year in jail and could be removed from office if convicted.

Sheriff Allen was indicted in Collingworth county but, the case is being handled by Wilbarger county District Attorney Staley Heatly.

He says it would be unethical to discuss the case while it's still ongoing.

Childress county sheriff Mike Pigg did confirm sheriff Allen is accused of hiring his stepdaughter to work for the sheriff's office.

Sheriff Allen turned himself in to the Childress county sheriff Monday and was immediately released on $4,500 bond.

The Collingsworth county district attorney recused himself from the case.  That's why the Wilbarger D.A. is handling the prosecution.
