Clovis to Ban Synthetic Drugs

Clovis to Ban Synthetic Drugs

A task force consisting of city leaders and citizens met Tuesday to draft an ordinance that would ban possession and the sale of synthetic drugs.
CLOVIS -- Another area town is planning to pass an ordinance banning synthetic marijuana.

Clovis city leaders met Tuesday night to draft the proposed ordinance.

A group called "Concerned Citizens Against Synthetic Marijuana" is leading this effort.

The group began lobbying the Clovis city commission following a September incident in neighboring Portales in which several teenagers became ill after consuming synthetic drugs.

The move to draft an ordinance in Clovis picked-up steam at last week's city commission meeting with more than 100 people in attendance asking city leaders to do something about the problem.

Concerned Citizens Against Synthetic Marijuana wants an ordinance in place by December 11th.

Tuesday's meeting is expected to push them in the right direction as the group drafts the ordinance that'll be presented to the full city commission.

Portales city leaders passed an ordinance against synthetic marijuana last week.

Businesses caught selling synthetic drugs three times in s 2-year period could lose their license for up to a year.
