AMARILLO -- A man is behind bars after police say he asked to borrow a victim's cell phone and took off with it.

Tuesday morning, an undercover swat officer says he spotted a red bmw driving through parking lots near the mall.

The officer says the driver appeared to be "prowling". So, he followed them into the mall parking lot.

Other officers started to investigate, and found out the man driving borrowed a woman's cell phone in the parking lot of target and took off with it.

Once officers caught up with the man, they say he took off running, but fell in a ditch near the frontage road.

40-year-old granville clement smith was taken into custody.
