When you think of a teen having a pet, you might think of a dog, cat, or even fish. But what about many horses?
15 year old Emma Perez has called Boys Ranch home for more than 7 years.
She says her family was having a hard time, so she and her sister moved together.
But her sister didn't stay, and that prompted Emma to want to come home with her.
"But then after a while, after half a year I just knew I wasn't meant to be at home yet. I was suppose to be with Boys Ranch because I really loved Boys Ranch," Emma says.
We asked Emma what her favorite thing about Boys Ranch is, and without hesitation, she says the horses.
Without Boys Ranch, Emma says she wouldn't have the opportunity to do what she loves.
She says, "it gives me horses, I can train horses, I can work with horses, I can ride horses every day."
This won't be Emma's first rodeo.
She says she's been in so many she can't even count, and, she says she's ready for this year.
"I'm doing pull bending and barrel racing."
When she was just 13, Emma got first place in barrels.
She says, "it's really nerve racking but fun, and you're adrenaline starts pumping up."
Besides the nerves, Emma says looking up and seeing fans cheering her on, is a feeling she won't soon forget.
She tells us, "it means that people really support us and people really love and come watch kids from Boys Ranch to watch the Boys Ranch Rodeo and participate. It really means a lot."
Emma says because of Boys Ranch she feels like the opportunities are endless.
Rodeo and horses aside, she tells us she enjoys school at the ranch and wants to be a cardio vascular surgeon.
