When you think of top tourist attractions, Amarillo may not come to mind.
But many people from the US are certainly coming to our area for a summer getaway.
Eric Miller from the Amarillo Convention and Visitor Council expected a big year for Amarillo tourism, and wasn't disappointed.
Miller says not only were the expectations met they were exceeded, providing a huge boost to the local economy.
He says, "it accounts for over $700 million of economic impact each year to the Amarillo area."
Not only do the guests bring in the big bucks, but their money provides more job opportunities.
"There are several thousand jobs in amarillo tied directly to tourism. That means hotels, that means attractions, Miller says."
We caught up with a couple locals and asked them if they're surprised with what a tourist attraction Amarillo is.
"I think Amarillo has a lot to offer with a lot of tourism . American quater horse, pantex, a lot of churches come for convention, Palo Duro Canyon."
"I don't really see a whole lot to do here. And i've been here a long time, since 1975."
They may have different opinions, but we're sure they can agree on one thing.
"If you don't come to Amarillo, you'll never know what you'll miss."
Amarillo did see a lot of visitors this summer, but many weren't headed out to Wonderland.
Miller says because of the weather this summer, the amusement parks numbers are down compared to previous years.
It's not just american's making their way to Amarillo, people are even coming from overseas.
Miller says many Europeons seem to love our western heritage, especially Route 66.
