An Amarillo Police Officer is in jail facing sexual assault charges.
In fact, the former APD officer was a liaison officer with the Amarillo Independent School District.
The former officer, 42 year old Donald Ray Sanders Jr. was arrested on September 17 as part of an ongoing investigation.
A press release from the Randall County Sheriff's Office says Sanders is being investigated for sexual assault of a child.
Officials say the incident is in no way connected to Sanders' employment as an officer.
Sanders was a liaison officer with the Caprock Cluster before his arrest.
Officers say on September 14, the Amarillo Police Chief was advised that Sanders was the subject of a criminal investigation being conducted by the Randall County Sheriff's Office.
Officer Sanders was immediately placed on administrative leave during the course of the investigation.
APD announced there was enough evidence to fire Sanders immediately.
Sanders is charged with sexual assault of a child, and booked in the Randall County Jail.
His bond is set at $75,000
Sanders had been with the Amarillo Police Department since 2003.
