AMARILLO -- The Amarillo Police Dept. is adding patrols to make this Christmas and New Year’s Holiday safe.

The department has a traffic grant courtesy of TxDOT that allows extra officers to patrol and concentrate on impaired drivers, speeding drivers, and drivers and occupants of vehicles not wearing seat belts.

There have been 28 fatal traffic collisions this year with 30 deaths in Amarillo this year.  Fourteen of those accidents involved impaired drivers. Thirteen involved excessive speed on the part of one of the drivers. Ten of the fatalities were not properly restrained in the vehicle.

Extra officers will be put out to concentrate on these violations to prevent these numbers from increasing.
