AMARILLO -- The Amarillo Fire Department was called out just after midnight to the 900 block of North Buchanan on a structure fire.
Officials say the fire was difficult to fight due to personal items and materials blocking doorways. Firefighters had to cut a door-sized opening in the exterior of the mobile home where the windows were.
Extremely low temperatures and wind chills below zero contributed to the difficulty in extinguishing the fire. An additional fire truck was called to the scene while several crews were sent back to their fire station in order to thaw out protective clothing and breathing air equipment. All of these conditions combined delayed declaring the fire under control until 3:30 a.m.
The two occupants escaped the fire without life-threatening injuries. One person received burns to a hand due to attempting to put out the fire before exiting the structure. The person was assessed, but the injuries were minor enough treatment was refused.
The fire remains under investigation.
