AMARILLO -- A simulated terrorist attack has emergency management in Amarillo prepared for the real deal.
Blastex 2013 is part of an annual exercise, with emergency management, local hospitals, and several other programs joining together, hoping to prepare for when disaster strikes. Their task today, responding to a simulated terrorist attack at the performing arts center.The fake attack used explosives, with more than 200 volunteers standing in as casualties for the event, and hundreds of first responders.Emergency management teamed up with local hospitals, Excel, Atmos, and several other agencies, All doing their part to make sure they're prepared to work with each other in the case of an emergency.
"It puts us all in the same room, so we're able to communicate back and forth," said Sergeant Brent Barbee with the Amarillo Police Department. "Whenever you have one of these exercises you walk through the steps, actually walk through the steps you find out where there are problems."
The exercise included medical surgery operations, how the hospital would handle mass casualty situations, and on-scene tactical operations.
