A Survivor's Story

An Amarillo woman wins the battle against breast cancer.
More than a million people are diagnosed with cancer each year.

An Amarillo woman has come a long way since her 2009 diagnosis.

"I was just in shock, like an out of body experience.  You're seeing it and hearing it, but it's really not me."

On December 15, 2009 Cheryl Daniel went for her annual mammogram.

About a week later she got a phone call from her doctor.

Then more tests came, another mammogram, a sonagram, and a biopsy.

A few days later she heard the words many people dread, it's cancer.

Cheryl says, "well we have three girls and at that time we had seven grandchildren.  You just don't even consider not doing the chemo."

Cheryl tells us she had a small tumor in her breast.

The doctor told her chemo would cut her chances of it spreading in half.

On September 1, 2010, after 4 big doses of chemo, and 36 rounds of radiation, Cheryl won the battle.

It was also 3 days before her birthday.

Cheryl says, "my entire family had a huge party celebrating my birthday, but also celebrating my second chance."

Cheryl says the love and care from Harrington Cancer Center and her family saved her life.

"My husband is one of my biggest cheerleaders, and then my three girls," she says.

Cheryl has been cancer free for 3 years.

She says it'll be two more years before she's what doctors call, "in the clear."

We asked Cheryl what advice she would give to a women who went to the doctor and heard those words, you have cancer.

Cheryl says, "you don't look back and this is the way it is and this is the hand i've been dealt, and i'm just going to make the best of it."

Cheryl says she recently went in for gene testing called BRCA.

It's a test to show if the cancer is hereditary.

Cheryl says that unlike her mother, whose test showed she had a 100% chance of passing along cancer-prone genes, she tested at 0%

She tells us she's thankful for her three daughters' sake.
