Buffs and Lady Buffs Sweep LSC Athlete of the Week Honors for the Second Time in 2014


RICHARDSON The West Texas A&M men’s and women’s track & field teams swept all four Lone Star Conference weekly honors this week for the second time this season between indoor and outdoor competition as announced Wednesday by the league’s office in Richardson, Texas. Junior Josh Helom (men’s track) and sophomore Paul Alongo (men’s field) were awarded for the Buffs while the No. 12 Lady Buffs were represented by juniors Sharon Kwarula (women’s track) and Malika Ouedraogo (women’s field).

All four athletes competed in Canyon last weekend as the teams hosted their final home meet of the season, the West Texas A&M Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Helom placed second in the men’s 400m hurdles on Saturday. He increased his provisional time and new PR in the event to 52.62 (52.73 with altitude). Helom currently ranks second in the LSC in the event and 17th in the nation. Alongo broke a 35 year old school record in the men’s long jump. In the event, he advanced his provisional mark and new PR with a distance of 24’-4.5” (7.43m). He currently ranks third in the LSC and 10th in the nation.

Kwarula won the women’s 100m hurdles event at the WT Classic on Saturday by breaking her own school record with a provisional time of 13.56. That time leads the LSC and ranks fifth nationally. She also ran another provisional time in the 400m hurdles, where she placed second, at 1:00.77. She ranks second in the LSC and sixth in the nation in that event. On the women’s field side, Ouedraogo also broke a WT school record in the triple jump with a provisional distance of 40’-3.25” (12.27m). She placed second in the event and ranks third in the LSC and 16th nationally.

The Buffs and Lady Buffs also swept the weekly awards back in February during the indoor season. Those honorees included junior Baptiste Moreu (men’s track), sophomore Zach Weatherly (men’s field), sophomore Mireia Guarner (women’s track) and sophomore Libby Strickland (women’s field).

WT will return to action tomorrow as it competes at the LSC Outdoor Championship at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The meet will run through Saturday evening. Check out the men’s and women’s track & field schedules for more information on the meet.
