WT Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Angelo State

No. 6 Buffs Win Nightcap of Doubleheader, 5-1
SAN ANGELO, Texas    The No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team responded with a 5-1 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Angelo State.  With the win, the Buffs improved to 31-12 on the year and 19-10 in Lone Star Conference play.  Angelo State ended the series at 25-19 and 14-15 in league play.
The win gave WT its 31st of the season, topping last season’s win total and pulled the Buffs within one game of LSC-leader Texas A&M-Kingsville in the standings with six conference games remaining.  TAMUK lost the final game of a three game series at home to Eastern New Mexico Saturday.  WT owns the tiebreaker with TAMUK, winning four of seven games this season against the Javelinas.  The regular season LSC champion will host the LSC Baseball Championship, May 8-10.
WT got on the board in the first inning as junior Nick Chapman singled to second and scored on a single by junior Aaron Blair for a 1-0 lead.  The Buffs could have added more as they left the bases loaded.  They tallied another run in the second as junior Heath Davis reached on the first of four miscues by the Rams and Chapman drove him home with a double to left.
Angelo State responded in the second with a triple by Brett David and a sacrifice fly from Hunter Choate for a 2-1 score.
WT plated two more runs in the fourth as senior Beto Rodriguez reached on an error to begin the inning and came home on a junior Justin Hargrove double to right.  Chapman hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hargrove for a 4-1 score.

In the seventh, the Buffs scored the fifth run of the game as senior Tyler McKnight singled to third and Blair singled to right, followed by a junior Dylan Dyson singled through the right side for a RBI and a 5-1 lead.
WT senior Joshua Weyker went eight innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, with one walk and a season-high 11 strikeouts.  The Buffs belted 10 hits in the game as Chapman went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored.
ASU starter Jake Feckley took the loss as he fell to 5-3 on the year in eight innings.  Feckley allowed 10 hits, five runs – three earned, one walk and he fanned five.
The Buffs return home to host Wayland Baptist on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Wilder Park and then host Tarleton State next weekend in a three game series, beginning Friday at 7 p.m.  Saturday’s doubleheader against the Texans will be Senior Day for the Buffs.
