CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M baseball team downed visiting Texas A&M-International 7-1 Sunday afternoon as it improved to 10-2 on the year, while TAMUI fell to 5-9. Junior Dylan Dyson went 3 for 4 for the Buffs and scored twice to lead the team.
The Buffs began the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line and junior Nick Chapman reached on a miscue by the DustDevils for runners at the corners with nobody out. Junior Aaron Blair reached on a fielder’s choice plating Redfearn for a 1-0 lead. Senior David Hebert reached on an error plating two more runs for a 3-0 lead.
A double by Ryan Jozwiak helped get the DustDevils on the board as he scored with two outs on a single from B.A. Castro, who hit first base and the ball bounced into right field. Another hit loaded the bases for TAMUI followed by a mound visit for the Buffs. Senior pitcher Ashton Sivigliano got out of the jam with his fifth strikeout of the game.
The Buffs loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a pair of singles and a TAMUI miscue. Junior Heath Davis singled to right, plating two runs for a 5-1 lead. The fifth error of the game for the DustDevils scored the sixth run and a 6-1 lead as TAMUI made a call to the bullpen.
Hebert singled up the middle plating junior Dylan Dyson for a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh.
WT closed out the game for the 7-1 win.
Along with Dyson’s three hits, the Buffs tallied 14 for the game and had multiple hit games from junior Nick Chapman and Hebert.
Sivigliano went 6.1 innings as he allowed one earned run on five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts as he improved to 2-0 on the year.
The Buffs return to the diamond as they open the 2014 Lone Star Conference slate Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at Wilder Park versus Texas A&M-Kingsville.
