CANYON, Texas – Tarleton State used 12 runs through the middle three innings to break open a 4-2 game for a 16-4 win over No. 16 West Texas A&M on Senior Day. With the loss, the Buffs fell to 32-15 on the year and 20-12 in Lone Star Conference play, while Tarleton State improved to 24-21 and 14-17 in league play.
Prior to the game, the Buffs honored 10 seniors playing their final regular season home game in a Buffalo uniform as the 2014 senior class included; Scott Cone, Nick Duncan, David Hebert, Dylan James, Tyler McKnight, Sam Ouellet, Matt Redfearn, Beto Rodriguez, Ashton Sivigliano and Josh Weyker. The senior class has gone 62-36 in the last two years, marking the best back-to-back season records in program history and has helped lead the Buffs to 30-plus wins in back-to-back seasons also for the first time. The 32 wins this season marks the sixth season of 30 or more wins in program history and the most since winning 33 in 1999.
A single, walk and hit batsman loaded the bases for the Texans in the top of the second with one out. Evan Robinson singled home the first run of the game with a hit to center. A sacrifice fly by Alvaro Moreno scored the second run of the inning.
An error, single by junior Jacob Caples and a walk loaded the bases for the Buffs in the bottom of the second and a meeting at the mound for the Texans. After a strikeout, senior Matt Redfearn singled to left, plating two runs for a 2-2 score.
TSU’s Rustin Thomas began the top of the third with a solo home run to left for a 3-2 lead, as he didn’t play in either game yesterday. Later in the frame, the Texans loaded the bases once again and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Meredith swelled the lead to 4-2.
The Texans added to its lead in the fourth with a single and two doubles for a 5-2 lead. Thomas hit a double as he was just a triple from the cycle starting the game 3 for 3. Nick Gibert hit a pinch-hit single to left as the wind played havoc with the Buffs’ outfielders for a 6-2 lead. Dalton Weeks belted a double of the left field wall for a 7-2 lead and a single through the right side plated two more runs for a 9-2 lead. Meredith doubled to left for the fourth double of the inning as WT senior Sam Ouellet relieved senior Josh Weyker. An error on the Buffs plated two more runs for 11-2 score and seven runs in the fourth inning.
Weeks belted a three run homer in the top of the fifth for a 14-2 score. Another double from Garrett Kilgore, his third of the game, plated two runs for a 16-2 lead in the sixth.
An error, single and walk loaded the bases for the Buffs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Aaron Blair hit a ground-rule double for two runs and a 16-4 score with nobody out.
On a difficult day offensively for WT, Blair led the way with 2 hits in four at bats with two RBI, while Redfearn was 1 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. Weeks went 3 for 4 with three run scored and four RBI and Kilgore was 4 for 5 with three runs scored and three RBI.
Weyker took the loss, falling to 7-5 on the year, while Kyle Gottardy earned the win in six innings as he improved to 4-3 on the year.
The Buffs conclude the regular season next week at Cameron before the conference tournament which is scheduled for May 8-10 at the site of the Lone Star Conference regular season champion.
