CANYON – The 2014 NCAA Division II Softball National Champion Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M are set to travel to Austin, Texas for a Tuesday afternoon Meet & Greet with Texas Governor Rick Perry starting at 2:20 p.m. in the Reception Room on the second floor of the Texas State Capitol Building.
“What an opportunity for our student-athletes and coaching staff, this will be a special occasion that everyone involved with Lady Buff Softball will never forget” said WT head coach Kevin Blaskowski “Thank you to Governor Perry and his staff for the chance to visit the Texas State Capitol, we’re excited to bring a part of Buff Nation to Austin.”
The Lady Buffs claimed the program's first ever National Championship on Memorial Day as WT and Valdosta State took a pitcher's duel scoreless into the seventh inning before sophomore second baseman Brittany Gehle played the hero with a three run homerun with two outs as WT held on to claim the win, 3-2.
The title marked just the fourth National Championship in West Texas A&M's NCAA history as the Lady Buff Volleyball team captured titles in 1990, 1991 and 1997. The Lady Buffs become the fourth team in NCAA history to claim a title while winning 60 games in a season, joining Cal State-Northridge (1985), Augustana (1991) and North Dakota State (2000).
