Moreu Tabbed LSC Outdoor T&F Men's Academic Runner of the Year, Three Lady Buffs Honored


RICHARDSON -- Junior Baptiste Moreu of the West Texas A&M men’s track & field team was announced earlier today as the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field Men’s Athlete of the Year. Joining Moreu on the All-Academic team are three members of the No. 12 Lady Buffs: sophomores Bri Leeper and Libby Strickland and junior Emma Love.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Runner of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.

Below is a look at this year’s Buff and Lady Buff LSC All-Academic Team members:

Baptiste Moreu (3.73, Finance)

Moreu also was named the 2014 Indoor track & field LSC Academic Athlete of the Year, sweeping the honors during the season. He was a national qualifier in the mile during indoor where he placed 12th in the country. During the indoor season, Moreu broke a 37-year old school record in the indoor men’s mile with a time of 4:06.77 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass. His converted time also set the new LSC record in the event. He set a facility record in the 1000m three weeks ago in the WT Open with a first place time of 2:34.28. Moreu is currently a provisional qualifier in the men’s 1500m where he ran a 3:51.05 personal record time two weeks ago at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Bri Leeper (4.00, Mass Communications/Broadcasting)

Leeper has already recorded 11 top-five finishes and two first-place finishes in her events during the outdoor season…Has competed in the 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, 100m and 200m events…2013 Outdoor T&F All-American in the 4x100m relay…2014 Indoor T&F LSC Academic All-Conference and national 4x400m relay alternate…Currently a provisional qualifier in the 200m dash with a time of 24.44.

Emma Love (4.00, Sports & Exercise Science)

2013 Elite 89 winner during the cross country season…2014 Indoor T&F LSC Academic All-Conference…Has set personal bests in all four of her events this outdoor season including the 1500m (4:54.30), 3000m (10:23.46), 5000m (18:10.57) and 10000m (37:41.07)…Recorded two top-four finishes during the outdoor season…School record holder in both the 3000m and 10000m…Broke her own school record in the 10000m two weeks ago at the Kansas Relays with a time of 37:41.07.

Libby Strickland (3.84, Biology)

Currently a provisional qualifier in six different events (100m, 200m, 4x100m & 4x400m relays, long jump and high jump)…Already a four-time All-American as a sophomore…Ranks in the top-10 in the nation and top-five in the LSC in the 100m, 200m, high jump and long jump events…Has her name in eight school records, three of which she has broken during the current outdoor season…2014 Indoor T&F LSC high jump champion and All-American in high jump and pentathlon…2014 Indoor T&F LSC All-Academic and USTFCCCA All-Region selection…Twice named LSC Field Athlete of the Week during the 2014 indoor season and named once as the LSC Track Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season.

WT will return to action tomorrow as it competes at the LSC Outdoor Championship at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The meet will run through Saturday evening. Check out the men’s and women’s track & field schedules for more information on the meet.
