GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Bri Leeper, a sophomore at West Texas A&M University, is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2014 NCAA Division II Women’s Outdoor Track & Field National Championship.
Leeper, majoring in Mass Communications-Broadcasting with a minor in Spanish, currently carries a perfect 4.00 GPA with 86 total credit hours as only a sophomore. Leeper was presented with the award during the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Social on Wednesday evening at the Grand Rapids Public Museum in Grand Rapids, Mich.
With Leeper’s award on Wednesday evening, the WT Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country program has taken two out the three national awards for the 2013-14 season. Junior Emma Love was the female recipient during the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships last fall in Spokane, Wash.
The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
Leeper will be looking to add another All-America award to her belt this weekend at nationals on the campus of Grand Valley State University. She was a 2013 outdoor All-American in the 4x100m relay where her team placed seventh. She will again be competing in the 4x100m relay this week with prelims scheduled for 4 p.m. CST tomorrow. Finals will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 4:20 p.m. CST.
The Amarillo HS graduate also qualified for the 2013 outdoor nationals in the 200m and 4x400m relay. Earlier this semester she made the trip to indoor nationals as an alternate for the 4x400m relay team. Leeper led the 4x100m relay team to an LSC Outdoor Championship just three weeks ago and was named LSC All-Academic, LSC All-Conference and USTFCCCA All-Region.
