MANSFIELD, Texas – The 28th-ranked West Texas A&M women’s golf team currently sits sixth following the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Women’s Super Region 4 Tournament Monday. The Lady Buffs carded a team score of 324 on the par 72, 6,059-yard Walnut Creek Country Club Course.
St. Edward’s leads the nine-team field heading into tomorrow’s second round with a team score of 306. Tarleton State is second with a 310, followed by California Baptist with a 314 score. The host Dallas Baptist Patriots are fourth with a 320, followed by Cal State-East Bay at 323 and the Lady Buffs round ou the top six. Hawaii-Hilo is seventh with a 326 score, followed by Midwestern State at 328 and Chico State is ninth with a 337 score.
Individually, Colorado State-Pueblo’s Hee-Leina Kim leads the 49-player field with a 71. She is one of four individuals from non-competing teams in the field. SEU’s Taylor Moreno and Tarleton State’s Jessica Pickwick are tied for second each with a 74.
The top three finishing teams along with the top three individuals not with an advancing team, will advance to the national championship, which scheduled for May 14-17 at Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, N.C. Lenoir-Rhyne University will serve as the host of the championships.
WT sophomore Glory Jangthongsiri is tied for ninth with a 77. She would be the third of three individuals from a non-advancing team to advance to the nationals if the regional ended today. As a team, the Buffs are 10 strokes out of qualifying as a team with 36-holes to play.
Lady Buff sophomore Elise Strutt is tied for 21st after carding an 81. Sophomore Whitlee Woods is tied for 28th with an 82, while junior Judy Papenfus and senior Vanessa Spradlin Brown are tied for 33rd after each carded rounds of 84.
The second round for the Lady Buffs is scheduled for a 9:10 a.m. tee time tomorrow. The round begins at 8 a.m. with the four individuals, followed by teams 7-9 at 8:20 a.m. The third and final round is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
