MANSFIELD, Texas – The 28th-ranked West Texas A&M women’s golf team remained sixth following the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Women’s Super Region 4 Tournament Monday. The Lady Buffs carded a team score of 324, matching yesterday’s score for a 36-hole score of 648 on the par 72, 6,059-yard Walnut Creek Country Club Course.
“The team needs to post a solid round tomorrow and see if it will be enough to advance,” WT head coach Meredith Jameson said. “Again today, we didn’t hit as many greens as we needed. These greens are extremely slow and bumpy, which makes converting birdies and up-and-downs a challenge. Tomorrow’s forecast for high winds again.”
St. Edward’s leads the nine-team field heading into Wednesday’s final round with a team score of 617. Tarleton State is second with a 623, followed by Cal State-East Bay who moved up from fifth to third with a 310 score Tuesday and a 633 overall score. Host Dallas Baptist is fourth with a 639, followed by California Baptist with a 647 and the Lady Buffs round out the top six. Lone Star Conference member Midwestern State moved into seventh Tuesday with a 657 score, followed by Chico State (658), and Hawaii-Hilo is ninth with a 664 score.
Individually, SEU’s Alyssa Smith takes over the top spot with a 73 on Tuesday to go along with a 75 on Monday and a 148 score. CSU-East Bay’s Linda Brown is second with a 150 score as she dropped eight strokes from a 79 Monday to the low-round Tuesday with a 71. Tarleton State’s Isabell Jimenez Perea and Cal Baptist’s Tina Yang are tied for third with a 153. WT sophomore Glory Jangthongsiri is tied for seventh with a 155 on rounds of 77 and 78.
The top three finishing teams along with the top three individuals not with an advancing team, will advance to the national championship, which scheduled for May 14-17 at Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, N.C. Lenoir-Rhyne University will serve as the host of the championships.
Jangthongsiri currently has the third-best score of an athlete on a current non-advancing team heading into the final round tomorrow. As a team, the Lady Buffs need to make up 15 strokes tomorrow to be in contention for qualifying for nationals.
“As a team the ladies have committed to playing against the course one shot at a time, rather than focusing on a certain score or number,” Jameson added. “Glory is in very good contention for advancing as an individual, if the team doesn’t qualify.”
WT sophomore Whitlee Woods is tied for 16th with a 160 as she fired a 78 Tuesday with her 82 from yesterday. Junior Judy Papenfus is 39th with a 166 score (84 – 82), while sophomore Elise Strutt is tied for 30th with a 167 score (81 – 86). Senior Vanessa Spradlin Brown is tied for 39th with a 171 score on rounds of 84 and 87.
The final round is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
