MANSFIELD, Texas – West Texas A&M sophomore Glory Jangthongsiri fired a final round 74 and finished tied for fourth at the NCAA Super Region 4 tournament Wednesday. She carded a 54-hole score of 229 and was one of three individuals to advance to the national championship. The Lady Buffs shot the best round of the tournament as a team with a 313 and finished fifth in the nine-team field with a score of 961.
“Glory is very excited to compete in the national championship next week,” WT head coach Meredith Jameson said. “She had a very clutch finish as she played the last four holes two under. She has played well all year and is one of the top players in the country which makes me very proud to coach her. Her extreme accuracy with full shots and ability to stay calm and focused under pressure will be a huge asset at nationals.”
Tarleton State won the tournament title with a 919 score and a final round 296 on the par 72, 6,059-yard Walnut Creek Country Club course. St. Edward’s finished second with a 936 score and host Dallas Baptist moved into third with a final round 308 and a 947 score to advance to nationals.
The top three finishing teams along with the top three individuals not with an advancing team, will advance to the national championship, which scheduled for May 14-17 at Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover, N.C. Lenoir-Rhyne University will serve as the host of the championships.
Along with Jangthongsiri, Cal State-East Bay’s Linda Brown, who tied with Tarleton State’s Isabell Jimenez Perea for medalist honors with a 224, advances as does Tina Yang of California Baptist.
Cal State-East Bay finished fourth in the team standings with a 954 score, followed by the Lady Buffs. Cal Baptist was sixth (964), followed by Midwestern State (967), Hawaii-Hilo (972) and Chico State (987).
“I’m really happy because I came close last year, but a few bad holes kept me from qualifying,” Jangthongsiri said. “I really look forward to next week and really appreciate all of the opportunities WT has given men. I appreciate the scholarship support and the support from the people at WT, my coach and teammates. I have every intention to make Buff Nation proud.”
Jangthongsiri carded rounds of 77, 78 and 74 during the tournament to lead the way for the Lady Buffs. Four of the five WT golfers dropped strokes from Tuesday to Wednesday as the Lady Buffs had three scores Wednesday in the 70’s.
