HORSESHOE BAY, TEXAS – The West Texas A&M women’s golf team overtook Midwestern State in the final three holes to finish second at the Lone Star Conference Championship Tuesday with a final round 314. WT sophomore Glory Jangthongsiri finished second with a 151 (77 – 74), while Tarleton State won both the team title and individual honors as Isabell Jimenez-Perea carded a 145.
Heading into the final round at Ram Rock Golf Course, the Lady Buffs were third and seven strokes back of the Mustangs. WT dropped eight strokes Tuesday and edged MSU by three strokes, which came down to the final holes as WT had a team score of 636 and MSU was 639. Tarleton State carded a team score of 610.
Cameron finished fourth with a 651, followed by Angelo State (658), Texas A&M-Commerce (665) and Texas A&M-Kingsville was seventh with a 694. Following Jimenez-Perea and Jangthongsiri, Tarleton State’s Jessica Pickwick finished third with a 154, followed by teammates Sharon Lau (155) and Beatriz Prados (156) to round out the top five.
The Lady Buffs now wait to see if they will be invited to the NCAA Regional as a team.
On the men’s side, the Buffs fell 4-1 in medal match play to Texas A&M-Commerce following the stroke play round Monday. Against TAMUC, the lone win for the Buffs came as senior Devin Montague defeated Marcus Sanna by eight strokes as Montague finished 1-over and Sanna was 9-over. Sophomore Carson Greathouse lost to Mitchell Ray by one stroke and sophomore Brandel Woodman fell to Hagan Wood by two strokes.
From there, the Buffs fell to the third place match against Midwestern State. The Mustangs edged the Buffs 3-2 in a very tight match with four of the five players finishing within three strokes. Montague won his match with Jeremy LeGuen by one stroke and Woodman won his by two strokes. MSU earned a three stroke win over Greathouse and a two stroke win over Rodriquez and a win over sophomore Ethan Peterson to clinch the match.
With the split between MSU and WT on the men’s and women’s side, the inaugural Highway 287 Challenge is tied at 10.
