Buffs and No. 12 Lady Buffs Set to Compete at LSC Outdoor Track & Field Championship


CANYON -- The West Texas A&M men’s and No. 12 women’s track & field teams will begin competition tomorrow afternoon in the 2014 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Both teams will be looking for the season sweep as they each took home the hardware doing the indoor season, their first LSC titles in program history.

The meet this week will begin tomorrow at Noon and extend through Saturday evening. Texas A&M-Kingsville is hosting the competition in Kingsville, Texas and the meet will be held at Javelina Stadium.

Teams competing at the LSC Championship include Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico, McMurry, Midwestern State (women only), Harding, TAMUK, Texas A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State.

Tomorrow will only feature the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon multi events. Senior Dustin Dickson will be competing for the Buffs in the decathlon. It will commence at Noon on Thursday as the day’s events include the 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m dash.

Freshman Sarah Climer will be representing the Lady Buffs tomorrow in the heptathlon. She will begin her events at 1:15 p.m. beginning with the 100m hurdles followed by high jump, shot put and 200m dash.

Friday’s decathlon and heptathlon will resume at 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively. Regular field events will begin at 1 p.m. Track events will start at 6 p.m. and run as preliminaries on Friday with finals being held on Saturday.

In the championship meet, regardless of the number of teams, official team scores shall be kept and recorded as follows: (8 scoring) Individual Events: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 and Relay Events: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. Medals will be awarded to the top-three individual finishers in each event along with the top-three teams in relay events.

WT currently has 28 provisional qualifying marks between the men and women. Individuals who qualify will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship on May 22-24 in Allendale, Mich. After the LSC Championship, the teams will have one more meet before nationals in the OBU Last Chance (May 8).
