CANYON – Coming off one of its best seasons in school history, the West Texas A&M football team is 13th in the preseason D2Football.com Poll, which was released Tuesday.
The Buffs are coming off of an 11-3 season and its second-straight NCAA playoff appearance and berth in the NCAA National Quarterfinal. WT finished seventh in the final D2Football.com poll at the end of last season. WT was picked second in the preseason Lone Star Conference Poll last month.
Defending national champion Northwest Missouri State, fresh of its fourth NCAA Division II title, is the 2014 preseason favorite to win the national championship. Grand Valley State is second, followed by Colorado State-Pueblo, Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota State round out the top five.
Tarleton State is 22nd in the initial poll, while Ohio Dominican is 10th, Indianapolis is 15th, Saginaw Valley State is 20th and Ferris State is 21st among teams in Super Region Four.
WT is 11th in the AFCA Preseason poll, while Tarleton State is 17th and Colorado State-Pueblo is fourth. Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico were receiving votes in that poll.
The Buffs open the 2014 season for the second time in three years at No. 3/4 Colorado State-Pueblo Thurs., Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. CT. The 2014 home slate begins Sat., Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium versus No. 17/22 Tarleton State.
