CANYON – The #1 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M are one of 16 remaining teams in the NCAA Division II softball postseason, a trip to the DII College World Series is on the line this weekend as WT will host the #14 Rattlers of St. Mary’s in a best-of-three series to decide the South Central Super Regional Champion. The Lady Buffs enter the weekend with a 54-6 overall record as they tied the Lone Star Conference single season wins record (MSU ’11) on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Buffs advanced to the Super Regionals with a Friday night win over Midwestern State, 6-2 before topping Metro State in five innings, 13-5 on Saturday. MSU used six homeruns to register a comeback win over the Lady Buffs in Sunday’s opener, 12-11 before WT responded with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap to claim the program’s second regional championship in four seasons. The Rattlers advanced to this weekend as they went 3-0 in their half of the regional tournament held at Mayer Field in San Angelo with wins over Cameron (6-0) and #7 Angelo State (5-0) and (7-3, 9 inn) to claim their fifth regional title in program history.
Action will begin on Friday night with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. at Schaeffer Park in Canyon followed by Saturday’s opener set for 1:30 p.m. with an if necessary game taking place around 4:00 p.m. or 30 minutes following the conclusion of game two. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the Division II College World Series taking place on May 22-26 at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.
