No. 6 Buffs Split Twin Bill at Texas A&M-Kingsville; Regain LSC Lead
KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Javelinas won the opener 10-2, while WT won the nightcap 9-2. With the split, WT improved to 27-9 and 16-7 in Lone Star Conference play, while TAMUK finished the series with a 23-13 record and 15-8 in league play.
In the opener, the Javelinas broke open a tie game in the fourth with six runs on seven hits as the big inning hurt the Buffs once again. Two RBI doubles and a two RBI single plated five of the six runs in the frame for TAMUK. The Javelinas added single runs in the fifth and sixth for the 10-2 win.
The Buffs opened the scoring in the first as senior Matt Redfearn singled to shortstop to begin the game. A single by junior Aaron Blair and a RBI single from junior Dylan Dyson plated the first run of the game.
TAMUK took the lead in the bottom of the first with two runs, courtesy of a RBI double to center from Ryan Guedry and a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead. The Buffs tie the game in the third with a RBI double down the left field line by Dyson for a 3-3 score.
For the game, TAMUK tallied 10 runs on 13 hits with one error, while WT had two runs on seven hits with two miscues. Dyson led the way for WT going 2 for 3 with two RBI, while Miles Holcomb was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI for TAMUK and Justin Lee was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI.
WT senior Joshua Weyker (6-3) went 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, eight earned runs and one strikeout. Denver Diefenbach (7-1) tossed a complete game, seven hitter allowing two earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts.
In the nightcap WT jumped on the board in the second with one run as senior David Hebert singled to left with two out. A walk followed and junior Justin Hargrove singled to right, plating Hebert for a 1-0 lead.
Two more runs scored in the top of the fourth as senior Tyler McKnight singled to shortstop and Hebert doubled him home for a 2-0 lead. A sacrifice bunt by Hargrove scored Hebert for the 3-0 lead.
The Javelinas got on the board in the seventh with a lead-off walk and a sacrifice bunt from Clint Black for a 3-1 score.
WT then handed TAMUK a dose of its own medicine with a six run eighth inning. After a quick out, Blair reached on an error setting up the big inning. From there McKnight singled home the first run of the frame. The Buff s loaded the bases and rattled off five more singles and the 9-1 lead.
The Javelinas scored a run in the ninth for a 9-2 final.
For the game, WT tallied nine runs on 14 hits, while TAMUK had to runs on seven hits with an error. Hebert went 3 for 5 with three runs with three runs scored and two RBI. Hargrove was 1 for 4 with two RBI.
On the mound, Cone went seven innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, three walks and he fanned five. Senior Sam Ouellet pitched the final two innings, allowing one earned run with one walk and two strikeouts. Cone improved to 5-1 on the year.
WT regained the league lead in the LSC standings and won the season series against TAMUK, 4-3. The Buffs conclude the road trip at Wayland Baptist on Tuesday, before returning home to host Eastern New Mexico next weekend at Wilder Park. The three game series is scheduled for one game Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
