Guthrie, Oklahoma -
(NBC News) Fire crews are working to contain a deadly wildfire burning near Guthrie, Oklahoma.
Dry, windy conditions helped fuel the fire, which has claimed the life of one homeowner who defied evacuation orders.
At least 20 homes have been destroyed or damaged by the flames, which have scorched more than 4,000 acres.
"I think it caught everyone off guard, even though we could see the smoke coming up, before we could get back over here it was on top of us," said Guthrie resident Mike Harvey.
An official said a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff.
