Dancers and instructors at one California fitness studio don't think the idea is such a stretch.
Dancer Mary Potts is reaching new heights after incorporating the pole into her workout.
"It is really hard for ladies, with your upper body strength, but I've built it," she says. "I never had it before."
"You can burn up to 500 calories an hour," points out instructor Mone't Ha-Sidi. "It is kind of of a combination between cardio and strength training."
There's a push by the International Pole Sports Federation to get "pole" to the olympics.
"It probably would be a lot more gymnastics based," Ha-Sidi says.
